Latvia's security needs more investments: Defense Minister

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Additional funds should be invested in Latvia's security, Defence Minister Artis Pabriks said in an interview on Latvian Radio January 20, adding that specific plans would be presented next week.

Pabriks explained that he had already turned to President Egils Levits' office and the Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš with an offer to consider additional investment in Latvian security – primarily, defense.

Pabriks has instructed the Ministry to prepare precise plans "so that it is not a pie in the sky". The minister plans to submit a specific offer to the prime minister and the president next week, possibly on Monday.

“I think the government should take such a step because those threats to our security will not diminish,” the politician said.

In his opinion, additional resources should be invested in capacity building in Latvia, in addition to the development of the defense industry. "We have good ways of manufacturing both weapons and technology. What can't be done by buying it from abroad can be done by ourselves in the next three years,” he said.
