Military facility near Daugavpils to be vastly extended

The Meža Mackeviči military facility near Daugavpils, eastern Latvia, is currently hosting the Tomahawk Soaring exercise which includes the participation of Czech, Italian, Polish, Canadian, and Spanish allies.

As part of a plan to provide each Latvian region with a military headquarters, Meža Mackeviči will be turned from a 10.5 hectare training ground for the National Guard into an major 6000-hectare military facility.

"We are trying to develop regionally. It's logical to want everything to be close by, so that National Guard from Daugavpils don't have to go to, say, Ādaži for training," said Viesturs Silenieks, the State Secretary at the Ministry of Defense.

"In the future there'll be a military base with shooting ranges and training fields here. Part of the territory will be fenced so that locals can't get inside," said Colonel Māris Simsons.

The existing premises will be refurbished and new ones installed, all within a period of six years, according to Defense Ministry estimates.
