Military training Namejs 2022 has started in Latvia, with a special focus on the security of the Baltics and Poland this year, said Colonel Didzis Nestro, representative of the National Armed Forces (NBS), on Latvian Television April 20.

Military exercises take place throughout Europe, including Estonia, Lithuania and Poland. “The “Defender Europe” training cycle takes place in Europe. Maybe we remember that two years ago there was the same level of training, then Covid-19 interrupted (…), but this year one of the main directions is the Baltic and Poland,” Nestro said.

He said that there was a rather “massive flow of forces” through Latvia, namely the port of Liepāja.

“Namejs 2022 training is like a framework. We provide training control elements, ensure that all individual training is being supervised and takes place in line with our goals,” Nestro said.

He said that it is particularly important for the security of Latvia to practice the support that it can provide for the deployment and transfer of military formations of the United States in Latvia.

“This is a rather important step where not only NBS units are involved, but also other institutions, starting with the Ministry of Defense, but also the sectors and civil authorities of the Ministry of Interior are involved,” said the Colonel.

In Latvia, most of the training takes place in Vidzeme and Latgale, as well as transfer from Liepāja port through Kurzeme.
