Proportion of female recruits in Latvian Armed Forces grows

Take note – story published 2 years ago

This year, 20% of the National Armed Forces (NBS) recruits are women, NBS Commander General Leonīds Kalniņš told Latvian Television on December 3.

This year, nearly 500 new soldiers have been recruited. Kalniņš said that the NBS had a wide range of specialties, 170 in total: “The armed forces have everything – modern technologies, opportunities to develop oneself, all sorts of technologies where one can work.”

This year, the proportion of women has increased among the recruits. Also, many have returned from abroad and engaged in NBS.

“I have to note that there is huge competition between civil structures, the structures of the Ministry of Interior, because the number of people in Latvia is unfortunately not increasing,” added Kalniņš. “We are looking for people in aviation, naval forces, communications areas, information technology, public relations and, of course, practical military specialties.”
