About 2,000 troops and 800 vehicles were moved from the Adazi military base in central Latvia to south-west of the country during the Saber Strike 2018 international military exercise, reported the LETA newswire.

Gunars Grikmanis, Chief of the Military Training Administration of the Joint Headquarters of the Latvian National Armed Forces, told LETA he was not in a position to disclose how long it took to complete the transfer but said the time had been adequate.

He noted that the operation took place in peacetime conditions and there were road works under way in south-western Latvia.

Grikmanis said he could not discuss the scenario of the exercise but said it was based on the official NATO scenario and aligned with the national defense plans focusing on the defensive action.

The Latvian Defense Ministry said that during the Saber Strike 2018 exercise in Latvia the emphasis was on tactical tasks in urban areas and moving large numbers of troops and vehicles.

This year Saber Strike was integrated with the Latvian-led international military exercise Summer Shield XV. A total of 3,000 troops from Albania, the U.S., Denmark, Italy, Canada, Latvia, the UK, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Germany took part in the integrated drill.

Saber Strike 18, the annual international military exercise organized by the U.S. Army in Europe, took place in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland from June 3 to June 15. About 18,000 troops from 19 countries participated in the exercise designed to enhance readiness and interoperability among allies and regional partners.
