The state of emergency will be extended in the municipalities of Ludza, Krāslava, Augšdaugava, as well as in Daugavpils.
Such a decision was taken in light of the rapid increase in the number of illegal crossings of the Latvian–Belarusian border last year and the large number of illegal crossings of the Lithuanian-Belarusian border in neighboring Lithuania. The Ministry of Interior said that Russia's war in Ukraine, which is also supported by Belarus, was an important factor. Without an extension, the state of emergency would end on November 10.
The Ministry of Justice has objected to the extension of the emergency, indicating that it is intended as a temporary solution. If the situation with pressure on the border is prolonged, legislative amendments may be needed. Justice Minister Jānis Bordāns also stressed this at the government meeting. On the other hand, Interior Minister Kristaps Eklons said that there is no other solution at the moment.
