It is planned that the VNĪ will manage, implement and monitor all the work needed to build external border infrastructure, carry out the necessary procurement for the construction of external border infrastructure, and enter into procurement contracts. On the other hand, responsibility for deforestation is planned in cooperation with the Provision State Agency, Interior Minister Marija Golubeva said at the government meeting.
It is expected that the VNĪ will provide the Monitoring Committee for the Construction of the External Border Infrastructure at least once a month with an overview of the progress of the implementation of the external border infrastructure process. The Monitoring Committee for the Construction of External Border Infrastructure will monitor and coordinate the construction of the external border infrastructure. The work of the Committee will be organized by the Ministry of the Interior and will be chaired by the Minister for the Interior.
The draft law has yet to be viewed in the Saeima. Given the need to start construction work on the external land border infrastructure immediately, the draft law will enter into force on the day following the adoption.
The length of Latvia's external border is a total of 456.6 kilometers (km), of which 283.6 km are with the Russian Federation and 173 km with Belarus.
