State Security Service probes alleged justification of Russia's war online

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On January 4, the State Security Service detained a supporter of Russia whose activities in the Internet environment over the longer term were aimed at provoking hatred against Latvians and Ukrainians, as well as justifying and glorifying Russia's war against Ukraine, the VDD said January 9.

The VDD also carried out court-sanctioned procedural activities during which various media were removed.

Criminal proceedings against this person were initiated by the VDD on January 2 this year in connection with suspected public acquittal and glorification of crimes against peace and war crimes and activities aimed at raising ethnic hatred.

The information obtained by the VDD shows that the person has acted purposefully and systematically, with a number of profiles on the video-sharing platform TikTok. In videos and live broadcasts, the person distributed disinformation about what was happening in Latvia, spoke contemptuously about Latvians and Ukrainians, and praised the Russian armed forces and Russia's advanced war in Ukraine.

The VDD has applied a suspect status to the person.

On January 6, the Court applied detention as a security measure to the person, with a bail of EUR 3,500.

The investigation in this criminal proceeding is ongoing.

The VDD recalls that no person shall be deemed guilty until his or her fault has been recognized in accordance with the procedures laid down by law.
