The government has approved the Defense Ministry’s plan to organize two major multinational military exercises in Latvia this fall, LETA reported on August 13.

The Silver Arrow, a joint exercise of the National Armed Forces (NAF) and allied troops, is scheduled to take place in Latvia from September 23 to October 6.

Participating in the Silver Arrow will be armed force units from Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia. The aim of the exercise will be to improve the planning and implementation of national defense operations.

The memorably-monikered Furious Axe exercise, meanwhile, is planned to take place from October 28 to November 10. This will be a tactical, battalion-level field exercise, involving units from Latvia, Estonia, as well as NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Estonia.

Furious Axe is aimed at improving coordination between the different units on Latvian territory.

It is expected that over 500 foreign soldiers will take part in each exercise.

Meanwhile from August 12 to October 6, the Latvian Armed Forces Military Training Cycle “Namejs 2019” takes place in Latvia to test and improve the readiness of units within the collective defense system.

Namejs 2019 will be attended by Latvian and Allied soldiers and national guards, reserve soldiers, volunteer reservists, employees of the Ministry of Defense, police officers and border guards.

The active phase of the military training cycle will take place not only at the Ādaži military ranges and regional military zones, but also in Riga and Pieriga, Lielvarde, Jekabpils, Skrunda, large swathes of the countryside and the Baltic Sea.

Citizens are advised not to worry about seeing soldiers and national guards units in transit and to comply with instructions to let them pass unhindered.
