Women invited to be part of Latvian army's Honor Guard

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Starting from July 28, women will, for the first time, be able to apply for service in the Honor Guard Company of the Latvian Armed Forces (NBS).

The honor guard company is one of the most visible unit of the NBS, which represents Latvia and the National Armed Forces, famous for providing an honor guard at the Freedom Monument in central Rīga and Rīga Castle, both of which are favorites among tourists.

The honor guard also participates in events of national importance, welcoming high-ranking guests and representing Latvia in international military events.

Until now, only men have appeared in public in the Honor Guard despite the fact that nearly 17% of the personnel of the National Armed Forces are women.

Within NATO, the involvement of women in honor guards is fairly common, with Denmark, Germany, Canada and the United States all examples of countries with female honor guard members.

"Experience so far shows that the presence of women in any team, including the units of the National Armed Forces, promotes a spirit of healthy rivalry in the performance of daily duties," said the NBS in a press release.

Speaking on Latvian Television July 28, Kaspars Kukša, commander of the headquarters battalion of the National Armed Forces (NBS) Honor Guard company, said that there have been some women in the Honor Guard company in the past who, due to various unspecified circumstances, did not get to perform the functions of the Honor Guard.

"Yes, we have come up with the idea that we could invite girls to join the Honor Guard... The world is flowing and changing, and stereotypes are breaking down, and we are ready to change along with the world... girls, come and apply," said Kukša.
