Latvia's only state sports school in financial trouble

The Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) will investigate why the Murjāņi Sports School faces financial difficulties, IZM Sports Department Director Aleksandrs Samoilovs told LETA September 17.

The new director of the Sports Department Samoilovs is concerned that the educational institution is facing financial difficulties, despite being allocated EUR 2.8 million this year, which is EUR 600,000 more than last year.

Samoilovs himself has reportedly identified several problems, but refrained from commenting further as an audit is ongoing.

The audit is due to conclude on September 20. The Ministry will then assess the situation and possible solutions.

The Murjāņi Sports School estimates that it will have a shortfall of €170,000 by the end of the year. The financial difficulties have not affected the start of the new school year, the school's principal Sergejs Čevers told LETA.

The educational institution is currently working in a "more economical mode", trying to save money at the expense of resource consumption.

"There are no signals that we have wasted anything, at least for the time being. Then there would certainly be a reaction from the Ministry of Education and Science. [...] We definitely need to live more frugally," said Čevers.

In the spring, the situation at the Sports School in Murjāņi also came to the attention of the State Audit Office.

The Murjāņi Sports Gymnasium is the only state-founded general education and sports education institution under the Ministry of Education and Science.
