Baltic International Academy under microscope of quality reviewers

Due to detected violations, the Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša (New Unity) has ordered to carry out an extraordinary accreditation of the private higher education institution "Baltic International Academy" (BSA), the ministry said.

The review of the quality of the higher education institution's work organization and resources will take place until February 1, 2025.

In the academic year 2023/2024, BSA was the sixth largest private higher education institution in Latvia with 1,252 students.

Currently, seven out of 11 of the study programs implemented at BSA are not accredited, thus the university is not entitled to issue a state-recognized diploma of higher education to students of these fields.

In addition, it has been found that the requirements of the Law on Higher Education Institutions regarding the activities of student self-government and ensuring student representation in the decision-making bodies of the Academy are not fully complied with, and the activities of the BSA Senate should be evaluated.

During the inspection of the State Education Quality Service, it was found that the Academy did not comply with the right of students to receive information on all matters directly related to their studies and possible careers as stipulated in the Law on Higher Education.

During the accreditation process, the quality of the institution's work organization and resources is examined, which may or may not lead to the granting of the status of a state-recognized higher education institution. State-recognized diplomas can only be awarded if the institution itself, as well as the field of study and the corresponding study program, are accredited.

Currently, institutional accreditation is a one-off process, i.e. it is granted without a time limit. BSA as a higher education institution was accredited in 1999. The school was founded in 1992 and until 2006 held the name of the Baltic Russian Institute.
