More than one million euros will be channelled to Ukrainian refugee children for the organization of various informal education activities, the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) said on Tuesday, April 25.

The support programme is planned to be implemented by 1 December 2023, involving approximately 3500 children and young people.

The IZM explained that support measures are being organized to reduce psychoemotional tension caused by war events for Ukrainian children and young people, as well as to strengthen the ethnic identity and community of Ukrainian children with the Ukrainian community living in Latvia.

The support program will organize a wide variety of activities, like Latvian-language learning, practicing Ukrainian traditions, trips into Latvian natural and cultural space, and other events.

Data from the Civil Protection Department show that 8,928 children of Ukrainian refugees aged 5 to 18 were registered in Latvia at the end of February 2023.

4,299 students have been registered in the Latvian education system, of which 1,524 in pre-primary education institutions, 2,775 in general education institutions, and 74 are studying in vocational education institutions.

The support program will be implemented by the State Educational Content Center in cooperation with local governments.
