In order to ensure an increase in remuneration also for teachers whose salary rate is currently above the minimum, the IZM has estimated that it is necessary to increase costs by 3.38% per student. This amount will be allocated from the contingency budget in addition to the €9.04 million already earmarked by the government's decision of April 21 to raise teachers' pay.
Government rules also specify wage requirements for educational establishment administration.
Meanwhile, the Latvian Education and Science Workers' Union (LIZDA) does not consider the strike requirements to be fulfilled, so the union council would decide on further protests.
LIZDA's head Inga Vanaga stated: "We do not believe that the strike requirements have been met. We will convene an emergency meeting of the [LIZDA] Council, and decide on further action. Today was the last day of the strike. It was stipulated that we strike for three days and then further activities, protests, will be [decided upon]. "
At the extraordinary meeting of the Government, Vanaga asked that the decision be postponed to the next regular sitting, asking for an opportunity to make sure that the funds are sufficient not only to raise wages but also to balance workloads.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš, believes that the government fulfilled the agreement.
Kariņš said after the meeting: "In difficult and detailed talks with representatives of the Ministry of Education, trade unions, and municipalities, we reached a final agreement on the schedule of teachers' salaries [..]. The government has fully fulfilled its commitment to the salary schedule for educators. The discussions today clarified that we still have a great deal of work ahead [..]. We need to complete this system."
