Covid spreads across schools of Latvia

It has been more than a week since pupils returned to school after the winter holiday, and this week, the prevalence of Covid-19 at schools has been much higher than last week, Latvian Television reported January 13.

After first testing last week, only 19 forms out of 3,000 had to go into remote learning. However, after a week, the number increased more than five times.

"At the moment, we have information that more than 100 groups of pupils are learning remotely. And every day in the department, we receive this agreement on remote learning from schools. We are gathering information at the end of each week, and the current data will be next week, but we see that these optimistic statistics are getting far worse, "said Indra Vilde, spokeswoman for the Education, Culture and Sports Department of the Riga City Council.

“For example, if we watch data from mid-November, mid-December, then the combined samples [of tests] showed a positive average of 1.8%. But looking at the preliminary data over the past two days, they are up 3.4%,” said Ilze Arāja, spokeswoman for the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).
