As of August 23, the most extensive Covid-19 testing in Latvia so far will be launched in primary, secondary, and vocational education institutions, Education Ministry said in a statement.

In order for the school year to begin, it is necessary to test all pupils and staff who are not vaccinated or overcome Covid-19.  It is planned to test around 200 thousand people this week, which is a challenge for service providers, educational institutions, children, and their parents. Samples of saliva will be used as a material for testing, but if necessary, samples from the throat and the nose (nasopharyngeal smear) will also be used for testing.

Each school shall have its own laboratory which shall ensure the testing of students and staff. The laboratory will prepare personalized equipment for the collection of saliva samples and ensure that they are delivered to educational establishments. The collection of samples will take place on a specified date and time period of which the educational institution will inform parents.

Children and staff with valid Covid certificates will not have to undergo a test. Parents should inform the educational establishment about the existence of a certificate.

The test results will be received individually on the day the test was conducted or on the morning of the following day via email and in the e-health system. An adult learner will be able to look at the test results himself or herself, and parents or legal representatives will be able to do it for underage learners.

The test result received will have to be presented (electronically or printed) at the school.

Testing for children at special educational establishments will start on September 1. The organization of testing will take into account the individual needs of each child.
