Latvia goes back to school

Take note – story published 2 years ago

On September 1, another school year begins in Latvia. After a year of mostly remote learning, there is much hope that the return to classrooms will last.

President Egils Levits had a message for pupils, students and teachers on the first day of the new school year, the so-called "Knowledge Day". Levits wished strength to the teachers:

"The main goal of education in Latvia is to build a state governed by knowledge, wisdom and virtue, where citizens live in democracy and prosperity. I wish that you hold this goal high despite short-term difficulties. To all of you, honorable teachers and professors, I wish endurance and tolerance!"

To students and pupils, he said:

"Though the new school year begins with caution in the health aspect, I encourage you to focus your strength on the most important thing. That is, in any and all conditions, obtain knowledge, develop talents, grow into versatile and able Latvian citizens."

Education Minister Anita Muižniece added her own thoughts, urging teachers and students "to start the school year with an optimistic view so that together we will manage to keep schools safe and open."
