Principal of Sigulda State Gymnasium Rūdolfs Kalvāns told Latvian Television that Covid-19 is currently aggressively spreading in schools.
In order to tackle the situation in schools more successfully, this week the government is expected to review a number of minor changes that would be important for school directors. “Including increasing the autonomy of our decisions. Let us decide completely [on our own] on hybrid models,” Kalvāns said.
Some schools are able to cope with the current situation, but others consider it necessary to fully switch to remote learning.
The Minister for Health Daniels Pavļuts agreed on the need to allow schools to make more independent decisions. “The Ministry of Health agrees with this that, in general, the situation is to be resolved on the basis of the situation in a particular school and class,” Pavļuts said.
He said that specific proposals from the Ministry of Education and Science could discussed at Monday's meeting of the operational management group directing the Covid-19 crisis.
This is not the first time the proposals on school autonomy are on the table; similar wishes have been expressed by schools since last spring.
