Take note – story published 1 year ago

As of September 1 this year, in Riga, some parents will have to pay 1-2 euros per day for a child's lunch at school or kindergarten, the Riga City Council decided on April 27 with 33 votes in favour and 16 votes against.

In order to ensure the continuity of the catering service that meets the requirements in Riga educational institutions under the conditions of rapid increases in food prices and other related costs, the municipality of Riga will increase the costs of catering in the capital education institutions from EUR 1.42 to EUR 2 per day in schools, as well as from EUR 2.77 to EUR 4 per day in pre-schools and kindergartens.

Lunch will remain free for pupils in years 1 to 4, pupils from multi-children, poor, and disadvantaged families. In turn, parents of children in years 5-12 will have to pay for 50% of the lunch, or EUR 1. For children in kindergarten, parents will have to pay EUR 2 per day.

The changes will take effect on September 1.
