Welcome rise in number of Latvian university applicants

This year, 10 911 people have applied to do undergraduate degrees at one of 13 higher education institutions in Latvia. This is the highest number of applicants in the last five years, according to information provided by LETA on July 10. 

According to the information on “latvija.lv”, 8465 applications were received for the 2015./2016. academic year entry, 8194 applications for the 2016/2017 entry, 8034 applications for the 2017/2018 entry, and 8149 applications for the 2018/2019 entry.

For the 2019/2020 year, however, 8638 people have applied to study at one of the 12 Latvian universities. Riga Stradiņš University (RSU), which has a different admissions system than the other 12 universities, has received 2273 applications this year, which, as claimed by the university, is 20% more than last year.

The largest Latvian universities attracted the most students. 

By far the largest number of candidates, 4062, applied to study undergraduate courses at the University of Latvia (LU).

Right behind it is RSU, which has attracted 2273 applicants this year. This marks the first time that RSU has managed to outdo the Riga Technical University (RTU), where 2270 people have applied this year, which is ranked third. 

Next is the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, which attracted 781 applicants.

The Daugavpils University has placed fifth with 413 applicants, becoming the most popular regional university in Latvia.

Next is the University of Liepāja which has received 280 applications. 190 people applied to the School of Business and Finance, 185 people to the Rēzekne technology Academy, 170 people to the Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, 114 people to the Ventspils University, 73 people to the RISEBA University of Applied Sciences, 52 people to the University College of Economics and Culture, and 48 people to the Information System Management Institute.

Bearing in mind that a single applicant could apply to several courses, listing them according to his or her preference, an overall of 10 911 applicants made 43 589 applicants, which means that, on average, a single applicant applied to four courses.

The most popular course among the mentioned universities (excluding RSU) is the “Law Studies” program at the University of Latvia, which drew 389 applications. Next is the “Medicine” course at the LU – 352 applicants, “Computer Science” at the LU – 337, “Psychology” at the LU – 266 applicants, “Communication Science” at the LU – 255 applicants, “Computer Systems” at the RTU – 248 applicants, “Information technology” at the RTU – 198 applicants, “Construction” at the RTU – 172 applicants, “Management Science” at the LU – 132 applicants, and “Architecture” at the RTU – 131 applicants.

The most popular course at RSU is “Medicine”, which has 6 candidates competing for a single scholarship.
