Establishing a new tradition marking the International Women's Day, the second annual hackathon aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in technology will take place in the mid-March, organizers have announced.

A week of events and workshops starting on Monday, March 8 will climax with a 48-hour sustainability hackathon over the weekend of March 12-14.

This year, the event will take place fully online, bringing in all interested participants from across the region and beyond.

The hackathon “Women. Technology. Sustainability.” is open to participants (including men) from all experience levels, and the organisers especially encourage people without any previous hackathon experience to apply.

“At the hackathon “Women. Technology. Sustainability.” we aim to focus on building new ideas, prototypes and solutions for Sustainability during the “New Normal”. The main goal is to provide a safe, well organised and welcoming space for women to have their first attempt in a hackathon, share and meet like-minded people,” said Anna Andersone, CEO of Riga TechGirls.

To join, individuals need to either formulate an idea for a prototype of a solution they would like to try to build within 48h and invite others to join them, or they can explore the ideas submitted by others and apply to join one of the teams. An idea needs 4-8 team members to be able to participate in a hackathon.

The hackathon week will launch on Monday, March 8 at 6pm with an online open discussion on Women in Tech, followed by open workshops during the week for all those interested. The hackathon event itself will launch on Friday evening, with 48 intense hours of working, building and creating until Sunday. The event expects to attract more than 200 participants from across the Baltics.

Hackathon participants will also have the opportunity to consult with experts from different fields - from engineers to lawyers, marketing or sustainability experts, designers and others during the hackathon, to ask for their advice.

The event “Women. Technology. Sustainability.” is organized by Riga TechGirls and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) and supported by TechHub Riga, Accenture and Printify. The hackathon is open to anyone, regardless of gender, geographical location or level of experience.
