Storms have become something of an unpleasant annual tradition in Tērvete Nature Park, and this year the damage is even worse than last year. Infrastructure, such as bridges, footbridges, and sightseeing attractions were also damaged.
"In the entire history of the park - it is more than 65 years old - this storm has caused the most damage to the park territory [this year]," said Lilita Kauste, head of the park's information center.
Kauste predicted that, under the most optimistic forecasts, the park could open in September.
"The first thing is to remove the dangerous trees because they are all over the area of the park that is reserved for tourists. We would like to clean up the themed part of the park, which is the most popular, that is the Dwarf Forest and the Fairytale Forest. And then go further away from the big, active trails deeper into the forest and look after those parts of the park," Kauste explained.
Last year's storm caused particularly severe damage to the Tarzāns amusement park in the park. After huge reconstruction works, where everything was practically made from scratch, it only opened to the public in June this year. And now it has been destroyed again. The theme park will not be restored at this particular location.
