Public invited to help clean up Latvia's lakes and the Baltic Sea

Latvia's public clean-up organization, 'Lielā Talka' has announced a campaign that starts July 22 dedicated to the health of the Baltic Sea.

Running under the slogan “Svinam DA(R)BU, svinam JŪRU” ("Celebrating Nature (and Work), celebrating the Sea"), members of the public are invited  to pick up garbage they find along the coast, but also along rivers and in lakes.

"In particular, we invite boaters, SUP enthusiasts, fishermen and other active people to participate in this campaign", particularly when it comes to collecting waste that cannot be easily collected from the shore, says a release about the initiative.

Vita Jaunzeme, organizer of the "Lielā Talka" movement and coordinator of the World Cleanup in Latvia said:

"Every day, living by the Baltic Sea and enjoying the beauty of its beaches, we do not imagine that our sea is one of the dirtiest seas in the world, that its ecosystem is dying. The intensive use of the sea, agricultural and domestic wastewater and our human habots are to blame for this pollution... Every day, with our personal choices, we are voting "for" or "against" the Baltic Sea.

To participate in the campaign, between July 22 and October 1:

1. Capture your "garbage hunt" in Latvian rivers, lakes and the sea in a photo or video story, showing what was pulled out of the water or found on the shores of water bodies.
2. Share these photos and videos on your social networks by adding the hashtag #SvinamDa(r)bu. The creator of the most interesting story will receive a gift card worth 200 euros.
3. The recipient of the award will be announced after the World Cleanup Day on October 10.
