Fire at Ādaži brought under control

A hangar in Ādaži, near Rīga, was engulfed in flames today, causing a large plume of smoke in the area.

In the afternoon, the fire was extinguished and its causes will be assessed by investigators.

The fire broke out on Lejupes street at around midday in a hangar believed to contain building materials.

Initially, there was a danger of the fire spreading, so 27 rescuers worked at the scene. Residents of the area were asked to close windows and doors due to the thick smoke. Two firefighters were injured during the extinguishing work, with one requiring hospitalization.

After three hours of work, the fire was extinguished. The causes of the fire will be evaluated in the investigation.

Ādaži is best known as the location of Latvia's largest military base, where NATO troops from many countries are stationed, but the fire was at a different location some distance away and unconnected with operation of the military facility.
