Swimming in Rīga not recommended in coming days

The Housing and Environment Department of Rīga Municipality urges residents to refrain from bathing at the capital's official and also unofficial bathing sites, the department said July 29.

Extreme rainfall has continued in Rīga since Sunday evening and by midday rainfall had reached 115 mm or 11 liters per square meter, more than double the previous record and one and a half times the norm for the whole of July.

Given the large amount of rainwater that has entered water bodies, it is not yet possible to judge the quality of bathing water. It should be noted that many areas and basements have been flooded, so various types of contamination may have entered the water.

The Health Inspectorate's official bathing sites along the Daugava will be sampled for analysis on July 30 and the results will be known by August 2, while the bathing sites in the Gulf of Riga will be sampled on July 31 and the results will be known by August 5.

Official bathing sites will be marked with "advised not to swim" signs. There are eight official bathing sites in Rīga - in Daugavgrīva, Vakarbuļļi, Vecāķi, Rumbula, Bābelītis, Ķīpsala, Lucavsala, and Lucavsala Bay.
