The municipality stated that the fee for managing unsorted waste will continue to rise in the future, calling for waste to be properly sorted in order to reduce costs.
The municipality explained that the increase in the waste management fee in Riga followed the increase in the unsorted household waste treatment tariff of SIA "Getliņi EKO", which was approved by the Public Services Regulatory Commission.
The tariff of SIA "Getliņi EKO" has been increased to 161.70 euros per tonne instead of the previous 146.39 euros. The tariff comes into effect from September.
According to SIA "Getliņi EKO", more than 60% of the composition of unsorted household waste brought to the landfill consists of waste that could be sorted at the place of origin – a sign that Rigans are not being as diligent about waste sorting as they might be.
In addition, the municipality draws attention to the fact that the fee for waste management services will increase again from January 1 of next year, when the natural resource tax rate for waste disposal will change from 110 euros per tonne to 120 euros.
