Both hiking routes are becoming increasingly friendly and open to everyone, including people with reduced mobility or vision.
The website baltictrails.eu now offers trail sections with suitable infrastructure for wheelchair users or those with visual difficulties. As explained by Lauku ceļotājs, this can include specially prepared alternative route loops, exit ramps to the sea, adapted parking areas, toilets, walking trails with information in Braille. For example, in Apšuciems and Pärnu, floating wheelchairs are available free of charge upon prior request. For Kuldīga, a specialized audio guide has been created to help people with visual impairments navigate the Mežtaka Trail through the Old Town of Kuldīga and along the Venta riverbank, said Lauku ceļotājs.
The hiking sections of the Mežtaka and Jūrtaka routes are now divided into the following themes:
Dream Tour: The most beautiful and characteristic sections of the routes are named as such, and include, for example, spectacular and varied seashores, ancient and unusual forests, special landscapes, national parks, and nature parks.
Cultural experience: sections of the route where you can visit castles, manor houses, parks, churches, hillforts, military heritage sites, historic town centers, museums, discover collections, buy souvenirs, and get to know local traditions, food, and drink.
Nature delight: sections of the route suitable for exploring and observing wild plants, birds, animals, mushroom picking, berry picking, landscape observation, nature photography and filming.
Family pleasure: easy-to-walk or pram-accessible sections or parts of the route with playgrounds, and specially designed branches of the route that introduce the natural values of the area in an interesting and interactive way.
Winter bliss: sections of the route that can be followed in snowy weather on skis or, in some places, snowshoes or on foot.
City hikes: Sections of the route through the urban environment - suburbs, parks and promenades, former or existing industrial districts, places where modern or historic architecture can be explored.
Easy hike: Easy and relatively short sections or parts of the route that are suitable for people with reduced mobility, seniors and others who do not intend to walk longer distances or more difficult parts of the route.
Cycling: sections of the route that can be cycled. They may include places that need to be avoided (footpaths, stairs, steep slopes) or where the bicycle needs to be carried or carried.
Canoeing: Sections of the route where, in addition to the hiking route, there is a navigable river, canal, lake, stretch of coastline or nearby islands in the sea.
