Demonstrators call for 'Park not parking'

On Monday, November 7, the Association "City for People" staged a picket in the pleasant surroundings of Kronvalda Park in central Rīga. The object of their ire was the Riga Freeport Authority and its employees.

"The aim of the association is to stop the employees of institutions from driving and parking their cars in the park, which is meant for recreation, not for car traffic and car parking," said organizers of the demo. The posters showed sarcastic slogans like "Live green, park in the park!" , "Welcome to the Kronvalda parking lot!" and "Kings have their own parking lot".

"In the adjacent parking lot owned by RP SIA "Rīgas satiksme", more than two-thirds of the spaces are always free. I don't see a problem why employees of the Freeport could not park their cars there, as any normal resident of Riga does," says Kārlis Krēkis, chairman of the board of the Association "City for People".

It became clear during the picket that the management of the Freeport had announced a "Green Day" for their employees on the same date, asking everyone to come without a car.

This news was also roasted with sarcasm by Kārlis Krēkis who said: "What a coincidence that today is a "green day" for employees! This post made an already fun event even more fun!”

The Freeport has its offices located slightly awkwardy inside the park, and high-end automobiles can usually be seen close to its entrance.
