New bug species found in Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Entomologist Nikolajs Savenkovs, expert of the “LIFE for Species” project of the University of Latvia (LU) Biology Institute has identified a new bug species in Latvia – the lunar hornet moth, Sesia bembeciformis, LU said July 15.

On June 30 , six adult specimens of this species were found using pheromone traps. Some of the specimens have been harvested and will complement the insect collection of the Latvian National Museum of Nature.

The larval stage lasts for 3-4 years. The species live in stalks of living plants, and the larvae feed on juice, but generally aren't considered a pest. Given that the species has not been identified in Latvia until now, it does not yet have an official name in Latvian.
