Oil slick moving towards Latvian coast from Lithuanian waters

An oil spill that happened in Lithuanian waters is heading towards the Latvian coast, according to Lithuanian public media's LRT English-language service December 28.

LRT, citing the Baltic News Service, said an accident at the Būtingė Terminal owned by Poland’s Orlen Lietuva subsidiary resulted in around 1 square kilometer of pollution in the open sea which is now moving in the direction of Latvia.

"Environmental protection inspectors have launched an investigation and are calculating environmental damage," Arūnas Malinovskis, head of communications at the Environmental Protection Department was quoted as saying.
