According to him, the City Council conducted a survey of Rīga residents in which 80% supported the idea.
Precise amendments are still being prepared. But they currently provide for the user, possessor, owner, manager or authorized person of the estate:
- to place packaging and paper containers by houses with more than five apartments where household waste containers have already been placed,
- place glass containers at houses with more than 10 apartments and household waste containers already in place.
According to Cepurītis, these points will not change because they are accepted by the representatives of all factions. The rules are scheduled for approval by the Committee on Housing and Environment, as well as the Riga City Council, in September. However, as the rules need to be adopted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM), they are likely to enter into force only next year, said Cepurītis.
Director of the VARAM Environmental Protection Department Rudīte Vesere added that not only is it necessary to provide containers but also educate people why waste sorting is important.
