Rīga Zoo celebrates 110th birthday

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Rīga Zoo celebrates its 110th birthday on October 12, said Anete Bilzēna, member of the zoo's board, on Latvian Television. She emphasized the zoo's contribution to science and animal preservation over the years.

“Each of you owns a small piece of the Rīga National Zoo, because it's all our common value,” Bilzēna said.

“This autumn we have realized that it would be inappropriate to hold an ambitious celebration, but for a whole year, 365 days, talk about what we can do. Each euro from visitor entrance tickets is directed to scientific activity.”

In the future, everyone who donates to the development of the zoo's science will be given a badge of the 110th anniversary.

“The Riga Zoo is a place that not only serves as an exhibition with beautiful animals but also talks about changing our consciousness, attitudes, our habits to preserve these animal species,” Bilzēna said.

The zoo's long-term plans have already taken some steps, the first of which is the creation of a Himalayan area promised in three years.

The official opening date of the Riga Zoo is considered to be October 14, 1912, when the enactment of its adoption has been signed.
