So long, and thanks for all the fish: Baltic walrus checks out in Finland

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The wandering walrus whose Baltic tour has provided a steady supply of headlines to the region's news outlets has unfortunately died in Finland according to the authorities there.

After first appearing in Germany and Poland, the female walrus stopped in on the coast of Latvia, as reported by LSM, before moving on to Estonia and finally Finland.

Sadly, Finnish public media YLE reports that shortly after trashing a fisherman's boat in one final flourish and taking up residence in a garden, the walrus died during an attempt to move it to a zoo for medical care.

"The combination of the animal's weakened state and the ordeal involved in its examination and transport were too much for it, according to the zoo," said YLE. "There are no plans to organise a memorial service for the deceased walrus," it added.

Nevertheless, we at LSM pay tribute to the animal we (but no-one else) called Wanda the Walrus. Thanks for your entertaining contributions to the newsflow in these dark times even if, unfortunately, there was to be no happy ending.

Goo goo g'joob, Wanda.
