Architects and traffic experts evaluated 105 new and unusual ideas for the use of the Daugava. The sunset-watching seats could be set up in August already, and talks are ongoing with the municipality about the water taxi.
The main objectives of the project are outlined by the competition operator Neils Balgalis: "Fewer cars, more opportunities to stay on the beach, so that it is not just a place we are passing through. Let us watch, meet, enjoy the environment – everything we can observe on the banks and shores of other cities in the north.
"We are already developing a plan for the coming years. For example, a few years later, the repair of the Vanšu Bridge is expected. We've been preparing the soil in good time for the restored Vanšu Bridge to hit the perfect waterfront! I know that the Rail Baltica project is designed to create a new crossing on the beach. With that, we're starting to think about how to use it further. "
He added: “There are other possibilities, such as connecting to the bus terminal after the reconstruction. In short, there are big projects that are running on their course and we want to help them fit into the city canvas. This is a small step, but at the same time very specific."
