Weasel your way into 2022 with the animal of the year

Take note – story published 2 years ago

We have already been swift to announce the bird of the year 2022. Now, the Latvian National Museum of Natural History is announcing... the animal of the year!

If you have not guessed already, the honorary title this year goes to the weasel (Mustela nivalis), also called the least weasel or the little weasel (though there is no indication of the most weasel).

The weasel is active all year round, adapting its fur to the weather conditions. Latvia has three mammals changing their fur to white during the winter, the weasel being one of them. Others are the hare, which was the animal of the year 2021, and the close relative to the weasel, the stoat (Mustela erminea).

Weasels hunt small rodents but are capable of hunting and killing animals three to four times their size. If there are leftovers after a good bounty, weasels create pantries of storage.

You can report sightings of the weasel all year on Dabasdati.lv.
