Wulf's peatmoss is described by the Society as a "large, beautiful, sporadically found species of moss growing in damp and marshy forests on wet mineral soil, as well as on the edges of swamps."
The moss of the year, according to the botanists, is easy to distinguish from other mosses as its top branches create a round structure which other mosses do not have. The branches are arranged in 7 to 13 bunches, with 3 to 5 pendent branches on each bunch.
In Latvia, Wulf's peatmoss is found in the northeast of the country, rarely elsewhere. It can be found both covering several square meters and in just a few clusters.
By giving it the coveted Moss of the Year award, botanists want to find out more about the habitat of the moss in Latvia.
