Blood donations now taken in central Rīga

The State Blood Donor Center (VADC) has opened new premises in an accessible location to many – in the very heart of Rīga, on Brīvības Boulevard 32, Latvian Television reported on May 2.

The new premises "Sakta" is bright and spacious. Kārlis Kazāks, director of the Latvian Radio 5 - Pieci.lv program, arrived as the first blood donor. He donates blood regularly, this was the 14th time.

“There is a good saying in Latvian – to share oneself. I think the easiest way to share oneself is this,” Kazāks said.

Next is Minister for Health Līga Meņģelsone. She encouraged others to come and help save lives. The minister said that the last time the blood had been donated was very, very long ago. “So this opportunity, in this center, “Sakta”, is great. In fact, we can come in before the meeting of the Cabinet and anyone can donate blood. I call on ministers and everyone else to take advantage of this opportunity and to help fellow people,” Meņģelsone said.

Currently, donors from each blood group are invited to donate. VADC forecasts that, because of the convenient location, the desire to transfer blood will be really great.

It is presumed that even 50 donors, more than at the headquarters of Sēlpils Street, could be served a day.

VADC Director Egita Pole said: “We are very pleased that indeed over the last three years in Latvia, the desire to donate blood has increased. We see every year that we have a record again in donor terms. But also after the pandemic, hospitals' demand for blood components is steadily increasing. Consequently, we are delighted to have more donors. Unfortunately, we also have more patients who need blood transfusions,” Pole said.
