The aid may cover the reconstruction, equipment, operation of hospitals, and treatment of patients.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the attacks on July 8 on a Ukrainian children's hospital and a women's health and family planning center had had a significant negative impact on the functioning of medical facilities, including by putting additional strain on other hospitals in Ukraine, to which patients were transferred in order to avoid disruption in treatment.
Preliminary estimates suggest that it will cost around USD 10 million (around EUR 9.2 million) to rebuild the medical equipment of the children's hospital, while some hospital buildings cannot be renovated and will have to be rebuilt.
In addition, the Ministry of Health is working closely with the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and embassies to gather information on medicines, medical supplies and equipment needed on an urgent basis, and is already working on organizing the next donation shipment to Ukrainian medical institutions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Latvia has been bilaterally assisting Ukraine with medical devices, medicines, ambulances, and other medical equipment and supplies since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
Since Russia launched its full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, Russia has continuously attacked civilian facilities, including hospitals. The World Health Organisation has identified 1878 attacks affecting medical facilities, personnel, transport, supplies, and patients.
