237 new Covid cases Tuesday in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

On Tuesday, August 31, Latvia recorded 237 new cases of Covid-19 infection, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

Of that number 206 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 31 were fully vaccinated.

The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 142,637.

Of 41,310 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 0.6% were positive.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants rose from 117.7 Monday to 122.1 Tuesday. That means the current Covid threat is rated 'red' or 'high' according to the official four-color traffic light system.

While 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants was the level at which the traffic lights changed from amber to red, the cumulative morbidity rate in Latvia has now exceeded 120, which was previously set as the level at which restrictions will again be strengthened. The government is likely to discuss this at Tuesday's cabinet meeting.

Five additional Covid-related deaths were confirmed. The death toll since the start of the pandemic stands at 2,578.

There are currently 159 patients being treated for Covid-19 symptoms in Latvian hospitals with 22 of that number displaying serious symptoms.

On August 30, some 2,425 people received a first vaccine shot and 2,143 received a second dose.

Meanwhile, in Estonia 358 new Covid cases were registered and in Lithuania 646 new cases were recorded.
