PM Kariņš: Latvia should have mandatory health insurance

Not enough public money is invested in Latvia's health care, said Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) in an interview with Latvian Television on April 26, stating that one of the solutions would be the introduction of mandatory health insurance in Latvia.

Medical workers are asking for increased funding for health care so that it constitutes 12% of the state budget expenditure. It is currently at 11%. Raising it by one per cent would require EUR 120-140 million.

The Prime Minister said that healthcare workers are currently demanding what is planned to be achieved over several years – by 2025.

“I agree with the healthcare workers that we need to allocate more public money to health care. We invest too little public money in health care, which means that the system actually becomes a paid-service system.”

According to the Prime Minister, mandatory health insurance should be introduced. At the same time, Kariņš acknowledged that it was doubtful it could be done very soon.
