Observations show that at the moment about one in five patients visiting a general practitioner presents with complaints of respiratory tract infections. GP Laila Atiķe, who works in Liepāja, said that this situation is typical every year.
"However, I tell each patient what their health condition is so that it is easier for them to make a decision - whether they want to be vaccinated or not," said Atiķe.
The Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) said that the flu epidemic has not yet started. So far, 112 cases have been reported, most in the 0-14 age group and especially in Riga.
Ilze Ūdre, Head of the SPKC's Communications Department, noted: "Overall, the prevalence of influenza is currently low, but it is slightly higher compared to last season. Cases are being reported more frequently."
However, the situation can change from week to week, and the increase is usually seen in December and mid-January.
"When the school holidays are over, the pupils return to educational institutions, then about two weeks pass and we see this increase," said SPKC spokeswoman Ūdre.
Covid-19 is also still relevant, with Liepāja GP Atiķe noting that the highest number of cases was seen in August. The incidence is lower now, but the symptoms often last longer and are more severe.
