Medical facilities will be allowed to share flu vaccines

Healthcare facilities will now be able to share unused influenza vaccines. This is foreseen in the changes to the vaccination and medicines rules approved by the Government on Tuesday, November 26.

The Ministry of Health said that this approach will help reduce the amount of unused vaccines and improve access to vaccines.

Last flu season, around 11,500 doses of vaccines, or 10% of the vaccines purchased, went unused because flu vaccines are only valid for the season.

The Disease Prevention and Control Centre (SPKC) will have to be notified of the transfer of vaccines to a healthcare facility, which will allow the vaccines to be tracked and registered in the vaccine information system.

Influenza vaccines are produced for one season only and demand may vary from year to year. This season, for the second consecutive year, three different flu vaccines are available at public expense, with a total funding of €3.14 million.
