On February 24, 2022, Latvia recorded 9,952 new cases of Covid-19, according to the latest figures from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

Of the newly-confirmed cases, 3,731 cases were recorded in unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated people, while 6,221 were fully vaccinated.

Out of 22,269 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 44.7% were positive. The 14-day cumulative incidence rate per 100,000 of the population dipped slightly for a third day ina  row from 7,166 Thursday to 7,069 Friday, further raising hopes that the peak of the infection wave may just have passed. Since the beginning of the pandemic 633,960 Covid-19 cases have now been recorded among Latvia's 1.9 million population.

However, there was also bad news with 32 more Covid-related deaths confirmed. This is the largest daily death toll since December 1, 2021 when 34 deaths were recorded.

All of the victims were aged over 50 years. Eight of the dead were fully vaccinated. The total death toll since the beginning of the pandemic stands at 5,191.

Thursday hospital data from the National Health Service show 1,245 patients being treated in hospitals (down on 1,274 on Wednesday). 146 patients were admitted and 158 were discharged during the previous 24 hours. 90 patients were displaying serious symptoms.
