469 new Covid-19 cases in Latvia Wednesday

Take note – story published 2 years ago

On Wednesday, September 1, Latvia recorded 469 new cases of Covid-19 infection, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

It is the highest daily total since May 21, but does come against a greatly increased number of tests being carried out ahead of the September 1 return to school. 108 of the positive cases were the result of school screening tests.

Of the total number of positive cases, 387 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 82 were fully vaccinated.

The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 143,106.

Of 54,975 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 0.9% were positive.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants rose from 122.1 Tuesday to 137.4 Wednesday. That means the current Covid threat is rated 'red' or 'high' according to the official four-color traffic light system.

While 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants was the level at which the traffic lights changed from amber to red, the cumulative morbidity rate in Latvia has now exceeded 120, which was previously set as the level at which restrictions will again be strengthened. However, the government has yet to indicate any changes to the existing rules.

One additional Covid-related death was confirmed. The death toll since the start of the pandemic stands at 2,579.

There are currently 161 patients being treated for Covid-19 symptoms in Latvian hospitals with 18 of that number displaying serious symptoms.

On August 31, some 2,574 people received a first vaccine shot and 1,972 received a second dose.

Meanwhile, in Estonia 408 new Covid cases were registered and in Lithuania 695 new cases were recorded.
