For a second day in a row, nearly 6,000 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in Latvia on January 22.

Saturday brought 5,789 new confirmed cases, only slightly fewer than the record 5,972 new cases Friday, according to the latest figures from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

Of 26,854 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 21.6% were positive. The 14-day cumulative morbidity rate per 100,000 population climbed further into uncharted territory from 2,111 Friday to 2,321 Saturday.

Since the begining of the pandemic 330,788 Covid cases have been recorded among Latvia's 1.9 million population.

Nine more Covid-related deaths were confirmed, though these were dated January 20, with the SPKC continuing to say it was experiencing "technical complications" with its data.

Saturday's data from the National Health Service show 663 patients being treated in hospital with 88 patients admitted and exactly the same number discharged during the last 24 hours. 87 patients are displaying serious symptoms.

In the other Baltic states, Estonia had a record-high 4,783 new cases and 4 deaths confirmed during the last 24 hours while Lithuania had 5,735 new cases and 17 deaths.
