95 new cases of COVID-19 in Latvia: biggest daily total so far

Take note – story published 3 years ago

Ninety-five new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Latvia on September 30, by far the highest daily total yet recorded since the start of the global pandemic.

In all 1,824 cases of coronavirus have now been recorded in Latvia.

The one consolation in the worrying figures was the fact that no additional deaths were registered with the death toll remaining on 37.

Double-digit daily figures have been prevailing lately, which was already a cause for concern, but Wednesday's total is nearly double the previous highest daily total of 48, recorded on April 1.

However, it should be noted that the number of tests carried out was also the largest since the start of the pandemic with the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) saying 4,271 tests were conducted during the previous 24-hour period.

In total 320,018 tests have been carried out since February 29.

So far 1,307 patients have recovered from infection.

19 patients are in hospital, all but one of whom are described as having moderate symptoms of the disease. One patient is described as having more serious symptoms.

According to the SPKC, 63 of the new cases come from known contact sources and four are arrivals from aborad (Ukraine, Russia and Austria). Investigations continue into the remaining cases.

On September 29 the 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 of population was 11.9 in Latvia, 39.5 in Lithuania and 42.9 in Estonia, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Latvia's rate remains the lowest in the European Union but Wednesday's figures are sure to see it continue its steady ascent.

The threshold for the introduction of compulsory self-isolation upon arrival in Latvia is 16. See our other story about the latest list of countries which require self-isolation for people arriving in Latvia. The country list is updated every Friday afternoon.
