The study examined 200 randomly selected Children's Hospital patients: 81 children under five years old, 66 aged 5 to 11, 53 aged 12 to 18. An antibody test was used to determine the presence of Covid-19 disease.
The study was conducted during the rapid spread of the variant of Covid-19 Omicron virus. Since this infectious disease tends to be asymptomatic, or with very mild symptoms particularly relevant in the child population, the percentage of children who had already had Covid-19 was not surprising. Nearly half of the children involved in the study and their parents did not know that the child had had Covid-19, said Dace Zavadska, head of the Family Vaccination Centre of Children's Hospital.
The study's data are further analyzed. They will make it possible to compare the situation in Latvia with the situation in other countries and to contribute to international studies to clarify the epidemiological parameters of SARS-CoV-2. This is very important as morbidity rates rise again, said the hospital.
