Booster shot recommended for at-risk group in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

The State Council of Immunization has recommended a booster shot against Covid-19 for people who are considered to be in the state of immunosuppression, the Council said August 31.

In patients with a high immunosuppression condition caused by disease or therapy, two doses of the vaccine received prior to vaccination against Covid-19 may not have produced an optimal immune response and effect, ZVA said. It is important to take into account the current epidemiological conditions for the spread of the Covid-19 virus in society, in particular, the prevalence of the delta variant of the Covid-19 virus, where these patients are potentially exposed to severe symptoms, the risk of hospitalization and chronic illness.

Therefore, an additional dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 in this patient group is currently recommended.

According to current scientific information, booster vaccine should be carried out by any approved vaccine, regardless of the vaccine used for primary immunization against Covid-19. Additional dose vaccination is recommended from the 28th day following the second dose or later.

The Council stated that at present, it does not have scientifically sound information, data, and evidence on the need for additional or booster shots for other groups of society, regardless of age or health.

The Council shall follow up on the latest available scientific information and recommendations from international health organizations and drug regulators, and as soon as scientific arguments are in place, the Council will give an opinion on the need to provide boosters to other groups of the public.
