Call to donate blood as stocks run low in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital (PSKUS) said December 14 that its blood stocks are critically low so the hospital might be forced to postpone scheduled non-urgent operations, Latvian Radio reported.

The hospital's representative Janita Veinberga said that emergency reserves are always in place and they are not currently exhausted, but the planned operations may have to be postponed, so the medics ask for public help.

“We appreciate every person who can schedule a visit to a State blood establishment, [..] If the Blood Center reports to us that the inventory of blood components has been reduced, of course, doctors have to reschedule their operations and plans that relate directly to these major operations,” she pointed out.

In December, there was a large number of transplant operations at Stradiņš Hospital, and it uses the blood stocks in daily procedures, so public support and understanding have always been essential for day-to-day work – providing assistance and saving lives for Latvian residents, Veinberga said.
