COVID-19: 68 new cases, one more death in Latvia

October 6 saw the confirmation of 68 new cases of COVID-19 in Latvia. 

In total 2,194 cases of coronavirus have now been recorded in Latvia.

One more death was also recorded, the fatality toll rising to 40 as a result. The latest victim was aged 60 to 65.

The Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) said 3,818 tests were conducted during the previous 24-hour period.

In total 340,395 tests have been carried out since February 29.

So far 1,322 patients have recovered from infection. 32 patients are currently being treated in hospital, three of whom are described as having serious symptoms.

 Two of the new cases were contracted abroad (in Finland and Austria), 57 cases are from other known sources and investigations continue into the remaining cases.

On October 5 the 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 of population was 29.2 in Latvia, 51.6 in Lithuania and also 51.6 in Estonia, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

The threshold for the introduction of compulsory self-isolation upon arrival in Latvia was raised October 3 from 16 cases per 100,000 of population to 25. See our other story about the latest list of countries which require self-isolation for people arriving in Latvia. All European countries except Finland, Cyprus, Liechtenstein and the Vatican state currently require 10 days of self-isolation upon entry to Latvia. The number for medical emergencies is 113, the number for enquiring about a COVID-19 test if you have developed some potential symptoms after returning from overseas or being in contact with someone confirmed as having coronavirus is 8303 and the SPKC COVID-19 advice helpline is 67387661.

The SPKC has information in English about the approved methods of protecting yourself from the virus, symptoms and medical procedures and an interactive map plotting the incidence and distribution of the disease in Latvia.
